Embodied Knowledge 2023

This far-reaching exhibition explores the concept of embodied knowing, or that knowledge both resides in and can be conducted through the body. With a focus on art’s role in documenting complex processes of embodied knowing, the show celebrates the power of individual insights to deliver us to mass liberation. The artists featured in Embodied Knowledge each uniquely consider: how ritual, performance and labor cultivate a deeper sense of self in relation to society; how radical intimacy subverts prescribed social roles and formations, welcoming more instinctual ways of knowing; and how direct observation and introspection catalyze the transfer of wisdom across time, space, and constructed borders.

What You See Is Me

Medium: acrylic / oil / yarn & punch needle
Artist statement : A collection of works that represents my current state of being, tapping into aplace of inner confidence that hibernates and awakes when it pleases. I want to depict a trance-like vivid energy with the aim of escaping the current reality and connecting with the free-spirited inner child within. I also want to create a visual harmony and balance between the audience and my work devoid of gloom.

Irene Macaulay as the model for my work.

People Patterns Exhibition 2022

Featuring Mesoma Onyeagba and Aishah Vakily.

PEOPLE PATTERNS SHOW STATEMENT

People Patterns is an activation of space through bursting colourful multi-media paintings. As artists, we wish to show our distinct approaches to similar ideas of abstraction, colour, representation, pattern, and community. As BIPOC it is easy to be pinned down to broader styles, narratives, or assumptions in regards to our work. What we wish is to not be bound to one medium, idea, or interpretation. While containing roots from places of cultural inspiration, these works are ultimately explorations of identity and individuality.

Mesoma Onyeagba:

My paintings explore the use of colours to create beauty in abstraction alongside incorporating my African background. Colours have always been important in my life and I make good use of it in a visually pleasing way hoping to somehow spread positivity to the viewer of my paintings or any creative medium I choose to explore. I am mostly inspired by my Nigerian culture, fashion, photography and anything that encourages my imagination. I am interested in the representation of black women in my paintings, textiles, fabrics and whatever that would draw my attention in the future. I am very fluid in my art journey. In addition to my art practice, I read about people and how the mind works on a daily basis, including readings about psychology, socionics, articles and eBooks that help me discover my mind as a kind of self-therapy which plays a role consciously and unconsciously with my creative process. I believe I am still a work in progress and hope to improve my life’s direction.

Aishah Vakily:

I am a multimedia artist from Cornwall, Ontario who works primarily with paint and fabric, while occasionally venturing into the realm of installation. Based on my experience as a mixed Iranian-American Muslim woman living in the West, my work explores and critiques representations of Middle Eastern and Muslim people by challenging the ways in which dialogue is created about us, delving into themes of a multi-faceted gaze, the perceived “Foreign Other”, hierarchies of aesthetic, as well as the nuances of community representation from multiple angles. As a hijabi, fabric plays a large part in my life, and so it comes to the forefront of many of my art pieces as a way of expressing identity. An important angle of analysis lies in what you as a viewer can and cannot see, with cloth and other methods or covering as significant motifs. The question I would like to pose in my artistic practice is such: “In both literal and broad senses, who are you in relation to this work?”.
